Dear Parents,
The entire staff of Coeur d'Alene Avenue Elementary School has a goal of establishing an atmosphere throughout the school in which children will feel safe, secure, and happy in order to maximize their learning opportunities.
In an effort to accomplish this goal, we have developed a Schoolwide Discipline Plan. The plan specifies rules that delineate the behaviors we expect from all of our students. The plan also outlines positive incentives for students who abide by the rules, thereby modeling appropriate behavior for all of us. In addition, the plan outlines consequences for students who do not follow the rules so that our expectations are clear and reasonable. Finally, our staff prides itself on expecting of ourselves what we expect of our students.
GENERAL SCHOOLWIDE RULES
- Students will follow directions the first time they are given.
- Fighting or “play fighting” are not allowed.
- Students may not bring gum, candy, or toys to school.
- Students will not call each other names, curse, or use put-downs.
- Students will not litter anywhere in or around the school.
- Birthday celebrations are not permitted during instructional time.
- Hats may be worn ONLY during excessively hot weather when students are outside.
- Students are NOT to play or congregate behind the buildings. They are to remain in
supervised areas at all times.
CORRIDOR RULES
- WALK – do not run.
- Students will not disturb classes while they are in session.
- Hold all playground equipment to and from the play area.
LUNCH BENCH RULES
- While waiting in line to be served, keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
- Do not throw food.
- Do not touch other students' food.
- Clean up your area and recycle all trash.
- Stay seated while eating.
- Raise your hand to be excused.
- Students may not bring soda in aluminum cans or bottles.
PLAYGROUND RULES
- Stay in assigned areas OR sit at lunch benches.
- Use equipment according to the rules.
- Freeze and hold all equipment when freeze-bell rings.
- After whistle is blown, students will walk directly to their lines.
- Students will stand behind the yellow line while taking turns at the drinking fountain.
RESTROOM RULES
- Students will not play in the restroom.
- Students will place all garbage in trash cans.
- Students will not chase each other in and out of the restrooms.
CONSEQUENCES
Consequences for students who disobey the rules include counseling and reminders by teachers and staff, time-outs in class, phone calls home, and for the most severe and persistent offences referrals to the principal. We believe in focusing on the positive efforts and actions of students, though, as a means to emphasize the importance of our school safety rules and procedures. As part of that effort, a weekly assembly is held to recognize and reward students who have exemplified good citizenship around the school or in their classrooms. In addition, each teacher reinforces and rewards behavior in their classroom consistently and fairly.
We are confident that a clearly stated and thorough Schoolwide and Classroom Discipline Plan will teach our children to be responsible for their actions and make this school year a positive and motivating experience.
We ask for your complete support in our efforts. Please discuss this letter with your child, then sign and return the bottom portion to your child's classroom teacher.
Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter.
Sincerely,
| Andrew E. Jenkins | Maralyn Soifer |
| Principal | Assistant Principal |
